TD Direct Investing portfolio tracker & trading journal

Connect TD Direct Investing read-only, combine your TFSA, RRSP and cash accounts with every other broker you use, and see what your trading decisions actually cost you.

In short

StackViewer connects to TD Direct Investing through SnapTrade using read-only OAuth. It imports your holdings, transaction history, dividends and both your CAD and USD cash balances across your registered and non-registered accounts — TFSA, RRSP, RESP, margin and cash — then merges them with your other brokers into one portfolio. From there it calculates your true time-weighted return and 15+ risk metrics, and analyses the decisions behind the numbers: entry and exit quality, opportunity cost and the patterns in how you trade. Connecting TD Direct Investing is free, and StackViewer can never place a trade or move a dollar.

What syncs from TD Direct Investing

Positions

Every holding in each TD Direct Investing account — Canadian and US-listed equities, ETFs, mutual funds and GICs where TD reports them — with quantity, book cost and current value. Each account keeps its own wrapper label so a TFSA holding never gets mixed up with an RRSP one.

Trade history

Buys and sells with date, price and quantity, imported per account so StackViewer can reconstruct your cost base and score each closed trade. History depth depends on what TD exposes at the time you connect.

Cash & balances

Both sides of TD's dual-currency accounts: your CAD and USD cash are read separately, so a US-dollar buy funded from a US-dollar balance is not mistaken for an FX conversion in your return figures.

Dividends

Dividend and distribution records flow into one calendar across every account, converted to your base currency so a US dividend paid in USD lines up beside a Canadian one paid in CAD.

What does not come across: your TFSA and RRSP contribution room, TD's tax slips (T3, T5, T5008), any WebBroker watchlists or notes, and account-opening or beneficiary paperwork. StackViewer also does not import positions in assets TD does not report cleanly over the connection, such as certain new-issue GICs or held-away products. SnapTrade does not offer trading on TD Direct Investing, so nothing StackViewer does can affect your account.

Sync runs three times a day and position values refresh about every 30 minutes during market hours. StackViewer is not a real-time tool and is not built for day trading.

What TD Direct Investing's own reporting doesn't show you

TD's WebBroker and the TD app report each account in isolation, and they report performance in a way that suits a big Canadian bank's onboarding funnel rather than an investor trying to judge their own skill. Your RRSP performance sits on one screen, your TFSA on another, and your USD side of a dual-currency margin account is reported separately again. If you hold four TD accounts — which is common once you have a TFSA, an RRSP, a spousal RRSP and a taxable account — there is no single figure that tells you how the money you control actually performed. StackViewer produces exactly that: one time-weighted return that treats your contributions and withdrawals correctly, so a big RRSP top-up in the spring does not flatter or dent the number the way a simple balance-change percentage would.

The dual-currency handling is the other place TD's numbers mislead people. Because a US-listed holding is bought with US cash and reported in USD, the return you see swings with the CAD/USD rate even when the stock itself has not moved. StackViewer separates the security's return from the currency's return, so you can see whether your Apple position actually made money or whether you were simply rewarded by a weaker loonie. On top of that, StackViewer adds the behavioural layer TD has no reason to build: tag each trade with your reason, conviction and emotion at the time, and after a few months you can see whether your high-conviction ideas in registered accounts genuinely outperformed the ones you entered on a whim.

Also use Wealthsimple?

A lot of Canadian investors keep a foot in both camps: TD Direct Investing for the RRSP and GICs they want held at their bank, and Wealthsimple for commission-free trading and a slicker mobile experience. Kept apart, the two apps report two returns you mentally add together and never reconcile — and the overlap (a VFV or XEQT position held in both) quietly doubles up your real exposure without either app telling you. Connect both and StackViewer produces a single time-weighted return across the two accounts, a combined diversification score, and one dividend calendar — rather than two apps you mentally add together.

SnapTrade does not offer trading on TD Direct Investing regardless. You can revoke access from inside your TD profile whenever you want, and if the connection lapses you simply re-authenticate on TD's site.
