In short
StackViewer connects to Questrade through SnapTrade using read-only OAuth. It imports the positions, transaction history and cash balances from both your CAD and USD sub-accounts, converts everything into one base currency, and gives you a single combined return that is actually correct — the number Questrade's own dashboard and most spreadsheets get wrong once foreign exchange and Norbert's Gambit are involved. It then merges Questrade with your other brokers and analyses the decisions behind the numbers. Connecting Questrade is free.
What syncs from Questrade
Positions
Every open position across your Questrade accounts — TFSA, RRSP, margin and cash — including holdings in both the CAD and USD sides of a multi-currency account. Equities, ETFs and options are covered.
Trade history
Buys, sells and the executions behind them, with dates, quantities and the currency each trade settled in. This is what powers the trading journal and the entry/exit quality analysis.
Cash & balances
Cash is read per currency, so a CAD balance and a USD balance in the same account are kept separate and then combined at the prevailing rate — not silently added together as if a dollar were a dollar.
Dividends
Dividend and distribution transactions are imported and slotted into one calendar, including US dividends that land in your USD sub-account and any withholding applied to them.
What does not come across: real-time intraday prices (values refresh about every 30 minutes, not tick-by-tick); assets you hold outside Questrade or entered manually elsewhere; GICs and some fixed-income or non-standard instruments that Questrade does not expose cleanly over the API; and tax documents such as T5s or T3s, which stay in Questrade. If a position in an obscure or delisted symbol will not price, StackViewer flags it rather than guessing.
Sync runs three times a day and position values refresh about every 30 minutes during market hours. StackViewer is not a real-time tool and is not built for day trading.
What Questrade's own reporting doesn't show you — the FX problem
Here is the manual way to get an honest number, so you can see exactly what the tool is doing for you. A Questrade account with a CAD side and a USD side is really two ledgers. To calculate your true combined return by hand you have to: (1) take the CAD market value and CAD cash; (2) take the USD market value and USD cash and convert both to CAD at today's rate; (3) do the same for every deposit and withdrawal on the day it happened, using that day's rate, not today's; (4) time-weight the whole thing so a mid-year top-up doesn't flatter or punish the percentage; and (5) subtract what you started with. Miss any one of those steps and the return is wrong. Most spreadsheets convert everything at one flat rate, which quietly bakes currency drift into what looks like investing skill.
Norbert's Gambit makes this worse. When you buy DLR/DLR.U (or an interlisted stock) in CAD, journal it over, and sell it in USD to move money across the currency line cheaply, your statement shows a buy and a sell that look like a round-trip trade. They are not a trade — they are a currency conversion. Left uncorrected, a spreadsheet can book a phantom gain or loss on the gambit and mangle both your realised P&L and your USD cost basis. StackViewer recognises the pattern, treats the two legs as a conversion rather than a speculative position, and converts every cash flow at the rate that applied on its own date. The combined figure it reports is a genuine time-weighted return in your base currency, with the FX effect separated out so you can see how much of your result was the market, how much was the loonie, and how much was you.
Also use Wealthsimple?
Plenty of Canadian investors run a Questrade account for self-directed equities, options and Norbert's Gambit, and a Wealthsimple account for their simpler, hands-off holdings or a second registered account — and the two never appear in the same place. Connect both and StackViewer produces a single time-weighted return across the two accounts, a combined diversification score, and one dividend calendar — rather than two apps you mentally add together.

Is it safe to connect Questrade?
The connection is read-only OAuth through SnapTrade. You log in on Questrade's own site and agree to the Questrade Access User Agreement there — StackViewer never sees your credentials and never stores them. The token that comes back can read positions and history and nothing else: Questrade's SnapTrade integration does not offer any ability to place trades, so no trading permission is requested at any point and StackViewer cannot buy, sell, or move money. You can revoke access from inside Questrade whenever you want.
Data is encrypted with AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2+ in transit, authentication runs on AWS Cognito with optional TOTP MFA, and you can export everything to CSV or delete your account at any time. Full detail on the security page.

Frequently asked
- Is it safe to connect Questrade to StackViewer?
- Yes — read-only OAuth through SnapTrade. StackViewer never sees your Questrade credentials and cannot trade or move money. Revoke it from Questrade in one click.
- Can StackViewer place trades on my Questrade account?
- No. Questrade's SnapTrade integration does not support placing trades, so the token is read-only and trading permission is never requested.
- How often does Questrade data sync?
- Three times a day, with position values refreshed roughly every 30 minutes during market hours. It is not real-time and not for day traders.
- How does StackViewer handle my CAD and USD sub-accounts?
- Each currency is read separately and converted to your base currency at the rate that applied on each cash flow's own date, so your combined return isn't distorted by FX or by a Norbert's Gambit conversion.
- Is the Questrade integration free?
- Yes, on the free plan, with no credit card.
