Public portfolio tracker & trading journal

Connect Public read-only, combine it with every other broker you use, and see what your trading decisions actually cost you.

In short

StackViewer connects to Public through SnapTrade using read-only OAuth. It imports your equity, ETF and options positions — fractional shares included — along with your transaction history, dividends and cash balances, then merges them with your other brokers into one portfolio. From there it analyses the decisions behind the numbers: entry and exit quality, opportunity cost, and the patterns in how you trade. Connecting Public is free, and it never gains permission to trade or move money.

What syncs from Public

Positions

Your stock and ETF holdings, including fractional shares down to the decimal, plus open options positions. Public is a fractional-first platform, so a $30 slice of a $600 share is tracked as exactly that — not rounded to a whole unit.

Trade history

Buys and sells with quantity, price and timestamp, which is what powers the trading-journal analysis. Historical depth depends on what Public exposes through the API at the time you connect.

Cash & balances

Settled cash and buying power, so combined portfolio weightings are accurate. High-yield cash balances appear as cash rather than as a distinct interest-bearing product.

Dividends

Dividends received on stocks and ETFs feed the income view and the combined dividend calendar across your connected brokers.

What does not come across: Public is unusually multi-asset for a mobile-first app, and this is where honesty matters. Crypto positions and genuine alternative assets (the collectibles-style and private-market products Public has offered) are not fully modelled in StackViewer's risk metrics — where they appear at all, they are carried as a value line, not analysed for Sharpe, Beta or drawdown. US Treasuries bought through Public's Treasury Account are held via a separate entity (Jiko Securities) and holdings inside a Bond Account are a managed basket of fractional bonds; both may sync as an aggregate cash-like balance rather than as itemised securities. Index options and any promotional or rebate credits may not reconcile cleanly. If your Public account is mostly Treasuries, bonds, crypto or alternatives, expect the analytics to cover the equity and ETF sleeve well and the rest only partially.

Sync runs three times a day and position values refresh about every 30 minutes during market hours. StackViewer is not a real-time tool and is not built for day trading.

What Public's own reporting doesn't show you

Public's app is built around a clean, single-account view of your total value and today's move. What it is not built to do is answer the harder questions a longer-term investor asks: what is my true time-weighted return once deposits and withdrawals are stripped out, how does the risk I am carrying compare to a benchmark, and were my fractional top-ups actually good decisions or just easy ones? Because fractional investing lowers the friction of buying, many Public users end up with dozens of tiny lots bought at different moments, and the in-app figure blurs them into one blended cost basis that hides which entries helped and which hurt.

StackViewer rebuilds the timeline. It separates your money-weighted deposits from genuine market return, scores each position against the 15+ risk metrics it computes (Sharpe, Sortino, Alpha, Beta, Max Drawdown and Value at Risk among them), and lets you tag every trade with the reason, conviction level and emotion behind it — so the pattern behind a run of impulse buys becomes visible instead of invisible. For a younger, mixed-asset portfolio spread across many small positions, that decision-level view is the thing Public's clean dashboard was never designed to give you.

Also use Robinhood?

Public and Robinhood are the two accounts we see paired most often, and it makes sense: both are US, mobile-first and fractional-friendly, and it is common to run one for your core stock-and-ETF holdings and the other for a more experimental sleeve. The trouble is that each app only reports on itself, so your real return and real concentration are split across two screens you add up in your head. Connect both and StackViewer produces a single time-weighted return across the two accounts, a combined diversification score, and one dividend calendar — rather than two apps you mentally add together.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS WHEN YOU CONNECT You click “connect” Your broker's own login page password typed here read token StackViewer reads positions & trades Cannot place trades move money see credentials revoke at your broker, any time, one click The token is issued by your broker and scoped to reading. Trading permission is never requested, so it cannot be granted — by us, or by anyone who compromised our systems.
Your credentials are typed on your broker's own site and never reach StackViewer. What comes back is a read-scoped token — trading permission is never requested, so it cannot be granted.

Is it safe to connect Public?

The connection is read-only OAuth through SnapTrade. You log in on Public's own site — StackViewer never sees your credentials and never stores them. The token that comes back can read positions and history and nothing else: StackViewer cannot place a trade or move a dollar, and no trading permission is requested at any point. You can revoke access from inside Public whenever you want.

Data is encrypted with AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2+ in transit, authentication runs on AWS Cognito with optional TOTP MFA, and you can export everything to CSV or delete your account at any time. Full detail on the security page.
