Empower portfolio tracker & trading journal

Connect Empower read-only, combine it with every other broker you use, and see what your trading decisions actually cost you.

In short

StackViewer connects to your Empower managed brokerage and investment accounts through SnapTrade using read-only OAuth. It imports your holdings, transaction history and cash balances, merges them with your other brokers into one portfolio, and then analyses the decisions behind the numbers — entry and exit quality, opportunity cost, and the patterns in how you invest. Connecting Empower is free. One thing to be clear about up front: StackViewer syncs the accounts Empower actually custodies for you, not the outside accounts you have aggregated inside the Empower Personal Dashboard, and not manually-entered assets like property or private equity.

What syncs from Empower

Positions

Every holding in your Empower Personal Wealth managed brokerage and investment accounts — individual stocks, ETFs, mutual funds and the fund sleeves inside a managed portfolio — with quantity, cost basis where Empower exposes it, and current market value.

Trade history

Buys, sells, rebalancing trades and reinvestments booked to the connected Empower accounts. Because much of an Empower managed portfolio is advisor-driven, expect frequent small rebalance fills rather than the discretionary trades you place yourself.

Cash & balances

Settled and unsettled cash, sweep balances and the total account value, so your true invested-versus-cash split is right rather than guessed.

Dividends

Dividend and capital-gains distributions and their reinvestment, feeding StackViewer's income timeline and yield-on-cost figures for the Empower-held positions.

What does not come across: the aggregated external accounts you have linked inside the Empower Dashboard (Empower reads those for its net-worth view; StackViewer connects to your own brokers directly instead), any manually-added custom assets — real estate, private equity, collectibles, crypto wallets Empower cannot custody — plus Empower's own fee-analyser output, retirement projections and budgeting data, which live in Empower's planning layer, not in the account feed.

Sync runs three times a day and position values refresh about every 30 minutes during market hours. StackViewer is not a real-time tool and is not built for day traders.

What Empower's own reporting doesn't show you

Empower is unusual in this list because it is really two products wearing one name. The free Empower Personal Dashboard (the tool most people came for as Personal Capital) is an aggregator: it links your outside banks, brokerages and cards into a single net-worth screen with a fee analyser and retirement planner. The paid Empower Personal Wealth side is an advisory business that actually manages money for you in Empower-custodied accounts. StackViewer connects to the second one — the accounts Empower holds and trades on your behalf — not to the aggregation layer. That distinction matters, because Empower's Performance screen shows the value of all your linked investment accounts over a rolling window (its support docs describe a 90-day default view), which is a net-worth story, not a decision story. It tells you the line went up; it does not tell you whether your advisor's rebalancing beat simply holding the index, or what a tax-loss-harvest sell actually did to your after-fee return.

StackViewer answers the harder question. It takes the trade-level history from your Empower managed account, computes a time-weighted and money-weighted return that strips out your deposits and withdrawals, and lines it up against the 15+ risk metrics — Sharpe, Sortino, Alpha, Beta, Max Drawdown, Value at Risk — so you can see whether the advisory fee is buying you risk-adjusted outperformance or just tidiness. For the trades you place yourself alongside the managed sleeve, the behavioural journal lets you tag each decision with a reason, a conviction level and the emotion you felt, then shows you the pattern months later: the high-conviction adds that worked, the panic sells that did not. Empower will never surface that, because Empower is measuring your net worth, not critiquing your choices. If you are the sort of investor who was drawn to Empower's whole-financial-picture view, the honest gap is that a picture is not a post-mortem — and the post-mortem is where the improvement lives.

Also use Fidelity?

Plenty of Empower Personal Wealth clients keep a self-directed Fidelity account on the side — the advisory-managed money in one place, the trades they want to run themselves in another. It is one of the most common pairings we see, precisely because Empower's model nudges the “serious” money into its managed accounts while the DIY brokerage stays elsewhere. The problem is you then have a return figure you trust for one and a separate figure for the other, and no honest way to combine them. Connect both and StackViewer produces a single time-weighted return across the two accounts, a combined diversification score, and one dividend calendar — rather than two apps you mentally add together.

The connection is read-only OAuth through SnapTrade. You log in on Empower's own site — StackViewer never sees your credentials and never stores them. The token that comes back can read positions and history and nothing else: StackViewer cannot place a trade or move a dollar, and no trading permission is requested at any point. You can revoke access from inside Empower whenever you want.

Data is encrypted with AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2+ in transit, authentication runs on AWS Cognito with optional TOTP MFA, and you can export everything to CSV or delete your account at any time. Full detail on the security page.
